10 Early Warning Signs of Parkinson’s Disease

National Parkinson Foundation – 10 Early Warning Signs of Parkinson's Disease.

I recently read a news article about a middle aged man who discovered he had Parkinson’s disease. One of his first symptoms was part of his hand moving (seemingly on its own). He recalled the story of Michael J. Fox who said that was how his Parkinson’s began. I remember reading about M.J.F. years ago, and I think it was his pinky that first began to “twitch”.

I recall a man I worked with 10 years ago in a nursing home who had Parkinson’s. He is one of the few patients out of hundreds who I remember crystal clear. He was unable to swallow and his body was very stiff in bed. He was unable to move at all. He was on a feeding tube. He wasn’t old- in fact he had few to no grey hairs…. I remember feeling very sad for his situation. When I visited him and talked to him, I had to lean in very close to his face to understand what he was saying. His mind was clear, but his words incredibly faint. I remember thinking, could I catch Parkinson’s from him? Although I had no nursing background and knew very little about the disease, I knew it was a silly and uneducated thought.

I have recently done some research on Parkinson’s (just out of sheer curiosity). It appears some people randomly get it and for others, there is can be a genetic link (esp. in those who get it before age 40). There is great information on http://www.Parkinson.org

A quick read is what I have attached- the 10 Early Warning Sings of Parkinson’s Disease. But don’t let this list freak you out- many of these symptoms can be linked to other health issues. If you have some personal information on the disease or a story, please share it.
