Lack of Sleep- How It Hurts You

We all know infants and teens need a lot of sleep, because their bodies are changing so rapidly.  But, when we consider adults, and the elderly, we often don’t associate sleep as something we “need”.  Some people are even proud- stating to others, that they only need “5 or 6” hours of sleep.

I recently read a fascinating article regarding our “catastrophic” lack of sleep, and that research shows that it is linked to a host of fatal diseases.  A professor at Berkley states that sleep deprivation affects “every aspect of our biology”.  A lack of sleep has been “linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity and poor mental health among other health problems”.  The article goes on to say that anything less than 7 hours of sleep is bad for our health.  Many view the need for more sleep as a trait of being lazy.  In short, the article states that a lack of sleep is killing us, and that we need to change our view of sleep and get more of it on a regular basis!

Body Weight & Other Factors Linked to Cancer

Did you know that obesity is linked to an increased risk of cancer? According to the American Cancer Society, “the World Cancer Research Fund estimates that about 20% of all cancers diagnosed in the US are related to body fatness, physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition, and thus could also be prevented.” This is very interesting and if you would like to learn more about this topic, check out this link:

Inflammation and the Link to Disease and Possibly Cancer

According to this article from the Mayo Clinic, inflammation is the new medical buzzword.  In this article, you will learn more about how inflammation affects the body- possibly causing disease and even cancer.  Chronic inflammation, also known as systemic inflammation is often associated with autoimmune disorders, such as lupus and polymyalgia rheumatica.  It also is linked to asthma, ulcerative colitis, and Chron’s disease.  Research is currently being conducted to determine possible links between inflammation and cancer.

Did you know that smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol causes inflammation in the body?  I have read in other articles, that a diet high in sugar also causes inflammation in the body.  What should you eat, to reduce inflammation?  According to the article above, a Mediterranean diet is a very healthy choice.

You should eat:

  • plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • plenty of healthy fats (olive and canola oil)
  • small portions of nuts
  • red wine in moderation
  • fish (on a regular basis)
  • a limited amount of red meat

This article also discusses anti-inflammatory medicines, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen as possibly treating or preventing cancer, however, more research is needed.

Have you wondered when scientists might find a cure for cancer?  Scientists might be close!  At Duke University, in North Carolina, scientists have used an re-engineered polio virus that attacks a specific type of brain cancer.  This special polio virus attaches itself to brain tumors and helps them to stop growing.  These studies have been miraculous, as this type of brain cancer is very deadly.  Further studies will be needed to determine if this procedure can be used for other types of cancer.  For more, watch this video.

Faith Through Difficult Times

I recently met a man who told me of his many health issues- including cancer in a kidney (it was removed), cancer in his hip and diabetes that has done serious damage to his stomach- so much so, that he will have surgery to have most of it removed.  He told me that only a small stomach will remain and may continue to be damaged by diabetes.  He began discussing his faith in God and that God had healed him before….

Some time ago, he went to the doctor to ask for a test to check the progression of a cancer.  The doctor told him it was over $20,000 for this special test and that the man would owe the full bill IF cancer was found.  There was no cancer.

The man said he believes that through his sickness, he has been able to witness to his doctor and other people he meets.  He said all that he has on Earth is Christ’s and that nothing is his own.  He was only in his early 50’s and had a tremendous faith.  He said no matter the future, he’s at peace.

As we age, we may face situations like this man.  When people have faith they are able to face hardships with peace in way others cannot.  Faith plays a significant role in the life of many people.

Did you know one typical Thanksgiving meal will have around 2,000 calories… as much as we are supposed to consume in a typical day?

A recent study shows that there is a link between cancer and obesity.  It does not say being obese causes cancer.  It says that people with obesity tend to have a number of other health issues and that obesity seems to tip the scale as far as making a person more likely to get certain cancers; especially in women.

Having an “ideal body weight” will make you less likely to develop cancer.  If you are in the normal range for your sex and height, your risk for cancer may be reduced by up to 10%.

Again, we all know that having a healthy body, means making proper choices daily- its a lifestyle.

Some tips for being healthy:

  • Consume very little soda- soda is “liquid sugar” and it is one of the most unhealthy items you introduce to your body!  (Its even unhealthy as “diet”).  Drink water or low-fat milk for the calcium.
  • Eat out “rarely”…. our family’s goal is to eat out only once a month.  We tend to eat healthier at home and this also saves us money.  If you do eat out, go for the salad with low-fat dressing and a lean meat like chicken that has been baked, not fried.
  • Get up and move- don’t be a couch potato.  Even taking a walk is much, much better than nothing.
  • Take a multivitamin for nutrients you might not be getting enough of in your diet.
  • Get enough rest.  Americans don’t get enough of it.  It helps the mind and body recuperate.

HBO Film on Health Crisis in America

I was recently reminded of America’s health crisis when I read an article in our local paper about the top 10 ranked states for childhood obesity.  South Carolina (my state) was ranked 2nd in the nation for childhood obesity, and 10th in the nation for overall obesity.

This is a topic that is difficult to discuss because no one wants to come across as judgmental. However, the percentage of children with diabetes has been on the rise for many years now. Children who are obese, turn into adults who are obese (more often than not). This leads to a whole range of health problems for people of all ages- children turn into adults, and adults turn into seniors. Obesity increases your risk for: diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and even things you wouldn’t even consider…. like pain in the joints from excess weight. Read the rest of this entry »
